General genealogy resources

There are a vast number of resources available to family researchers, many of them at no charge. If you are just beginning your journey, the reference desk at your local library may offer guidance; libraries often have excellent local genealogical collections. Check to see if there is a Family History Center near you; their volunteers can be very helpful, and can frequently obtain rare research materials on loan. Many towns also boast historical societies and/or genealogical libraries.

Online genealogy resources

We suggest beginning your web adventure with just a few key websites:
Cyndi's List provides an exhaustive compendium of links to online genealogical resources.

RootsWeb offers free access to pedigrees, databases, mailing lists and message boards, and simple family websites.

Genealogy.com services are similar to Rootsweb, with an additional emphasis on learning essential techniques.

Ancestry.com sophisticated tools and huge online databases are mostly available by subscription, but you can begin a tree at no cost.
